CHAPTER SEVEN

EARLY EVENING WAS the perfect time to go for a swim with Ginger. Now that the boat was ready for tomorrow, Vittorio maneuvered it down the canal to the rear of the villa, excited to get her to himself.

But when he tied up to the dock, he saw that the Della Scalla helicopter had arrived from the pad atop the office building. What in the name of heaven was his uncle doing out here without as much as a text or phone call to find out if he’d be welcome?

As Vittorio raced toward the back entrance to find out what was going on, he saw his mother leave the villa and head toward the helicopter. Maria wasn’t with her. She appeared to be alone.

His mother was the one who’d come?

Santo Cielo! That meant she’d already been inside alone with Ginger. He’d never known such anger and stepped in her path, putting his hands on her upper arms to stop her.

“Mamma—what are you doing here? Tell me what was so vital, you flew here to see me without letting me know you were coming!”

“Would you have answered if I’d left a message that it was urgent?” she retorted. “I don’t think so. I see a son who has lost his reason and sanity over some foreign beauty who has already invaded your life and the villa. Your father was barely laid in his grave, yet here you are taking a vacation and plan to move out of the palazzo.

“When you get back from wherever you’re going with this opportunist, do you honestly believe your job will be waiting for you?”

Vittorio shook his head. “I don’t know you like this.”

“That makes two of us. It’s time you heard the real reason you were made CEO at the board meeting. I was told about it early this morning.”

“You’re speaking in riddles.”

“Would it clarify things if I told you Renaldo talked to everyone on the board behind your back after the funeral and influenced them to vote for you?”

He let go of her arms. “What did you say?”

“It’s true. What greater proof that he wants you for his son-in-law! He’s been planning on your marrying Paola for a long time.”

A sound of exasperation escaped. “His plan for the two of us to marry so he’s assured of the Della Scalla fortune has never been mine. I don’t love her. End of story.”

“But you care for her. I know you do, and there are other things,” she argued.

“More important than love?” he blurted. “You can say that to me when we all know how you felt about Papà? I’d never marry a woman unless she’d become my whole heart and soul.”

“But you have a longtime friendship and compatibility with Paola. The kind of passionate love you’re speaking of can grow with time.”

“No, Mamma. Not even you believe that.”

She clasped her hands together. “You have to understand that making you CEO was Renaldo’s way of giving his blessing. Last night at the party he hoped to talk to you about finalizing the date for the wedding.
